ALL IMAGES WITH THE PERMISSION OF © GERD LUDWIG

National Geographic Kazakhstan

In 2021, photographer Gerd Ludwig shot an assignment for National Geographic Kazakhstan. He visited Astana (then Nur-Sultan) and Shymkent, updating his coverage that was published in the US edition of National Geographic in 2012.

Out of 15,000 images, I helped cull the selection down to 50 images. These are my favorite 16. At this point, I had been working for Gerd for 2 months.

In 2022, I helped Gerd Ludwig select images for his exhibition in Greifswald, Germany at Galerie F15. Shown were photographs of late artists Joseph Beuys and Hundertwasser Friedensreich from 1978, along with a variety of images from his years documenting the former Soviet Union for National Geographic US and a few photographs from his series,"Sleeping Cars".

The exhibition in Bremen, Germany featured 21 large photographs of resting cars at night throughout Los Angeles, undeniably the city of cars. Gerd Ludwig documents where these iconic Los Angeles inhabitants reside at night — tucked into driveways, proudly displayed in front of homes, glowing under streetlamps, covered with tarps, or simply left bare — evoking a mysterious quality reminiscent of the almost forgotten backdrops of the noir films so typical of Hollywood and Los Angeles.

This project was a fun one. It provided me with the opportunity to advocate for my favorite shots among the extensive collection of nearly 400 worked images taken over the past 15 years. Gerd and I engaged in a collaborative process, deliberating until we reached a final selection. I also took on the task of arranging the hanging order for this exhibition. This allowed me to further shape the narrative and visual flow.
